START SOMETHING BREAKFAST A BIG SUCCESS

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa (BBBSNEIA) thanks the community for making the 2nd Annual Black Hawk/Bremer Start Something Breakfast a BIG success. The organization raised over $19,500, which will be used to match waiting youth, or “Littles,” with a mentor, or “Bigs,” in the community. BBBSNEIA will serve over 530 youth in 2017 in Black Hawk, Bremer, Butler, Buchanan, Fayette & Floyd Counties. Without the support of many individuals, volunteers, local companies and sponsors, this would not be possible.

Over 300 guests attended the event, held at the Hilton Garden Inn (Cedar Falls), to learn more about the organization and pledge their support for BBBSNEIA. 35 Big/Little matches also attended the event and joined guests at each table, sharing their stories and the positive impact BBBSNEIA has had on their lives.

The agency presented nine mentors the coveted Big of the Year Award for the difference they have made in their Littles’ life. Rookie Big of the Year recipients, mentors new to the program, were awarded to Sandy Stanley, (Waverly), Thomas Dalton, (Cedar Falls), Kendra Crawford, (Cedar Falls), and Ben Kribs, (Cedar Falls). Big of the Year recipients, mentors matched with the same Little in a long-standing relationship, were Lydia Smith, (Waverly), Erin Bird, (Waverly), Harrison Cass, (Waterloo), Jim Larson, (Cedar Falls), and Eric Johnson (Waterloo).

The agency honored three businesses from Northeast Iowa that have supported BBBSNEIA for many years by committing financial resources, volunteers, and in-kind donations. The “Big” Businesses of the Year were awarded to First Maxfield Mutual Insurance Association (Denver) and CBE Companies, and the Rookie Business of the Year, a new supporter to the agency, was awarded to Peters Construction. The agency presented two Service Organization of the Year Awards to the Cedar Falls Kiwanis Rough Risers and the Greater Waverly Kiwanis.

The agency also presented two Volunteer of the Year Awards. Eligible volunteers included all non-mentor volunteers that support the agency annually at special events, on boards, or committees. This year’s recipients were Jeff Becker (Lincoln Savings Bank) and Erica St. John (CBE Companies).

BBBSNEIA thanks Silver Table Sponsors Allen College UnityPoint Health and CUNA Mutual, Bronze Table Sponsors Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, BankIowa, Community Bank & Trust, and Dutton, Braun, Staack & Hellman, Friends of BBBS Rada Manufacturing, Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Home Instead Senior Care, and PDCM Insurance, and in-kind sponsors Wartburg College, Copyworks, Popcorn Heaven, Signs By Tomorrow, Regal Printing, and the 40+ businesses who donated to the event’s silent auction.
