Volunteer Opportunities
Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister is about one
thing.  Magic.  It's about sharing simple activities with a
child -- magic-filled activities that become hallmark
moments in a child's life.  Something as simple as a
walk in the park or telling ghost stories around the
campfire can have profound life - and skill - building
effects for your Little Brother or Little Sister.  There is,
however, one note of caution: Don't be surprised if
you're the one who ends up having the time of your life!

There are many different ways to put a little Magic in a
child's life. Read on to find out which way is best for
you.
School-Based Big Brother or Big Sister
Bigs in Schools are male and female adult volunteers,
age 16 and older, who are matched with Little Brothers
or Little Sisters. The volunteer and child meet at the
child's school for about one hour each week during the
school year. Enjoy lunch together once a week, play
on the playground after school, or just hang out and
talk. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa works
with a variety of schools located in Waterloo, Waverly,
Manchester and the surrounding communities. With
many schools to choose from, it is easy to find a school
no more than 10-15 minutes away from any volunteer.

A Community-Based Big is an adult volunteer, age 18 and
older, who spends time with his or her Little Brother or Little
Sister 2-4 times a month for a minimum of one year. Our Big
Brothers can be matched with a Little Brother and Big
Sisters can be matched with either a Little Brother or Sister.
In addition to the fun you and your Little Brother or Sister will
have together, Big Brothers Big Sisters sponsors events
such as Halloween Scare at Heartland Pumpkin Farm as well
as offers free tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Big Couples
Big Couples are adult partners matched with a Little
Brother or Sister and who give the child an excellent
model of a loving, healthy relationship. Big Couples
function the same as individually matched Bigs and
share the fun activities with their Little Brother or Sister
together.
The Amachi Program
The Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCP) Program, an
initiative from the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, assists children who are facing the challenge of
having one or more parents incarcerated, by providing
those children with access to mentoring relationships. Big
Brothers Big Sisters is a recipient of this grant, and is
providing services to children ages 4-18 years residing in
Black Hawk County.

AMACHI is a Nigerian phrase which means “Who knows but
what God has brought us through this child.” AMACHI is the
only congregational based mentoring program in the United
States to offer a proven and effective model for mentoring
children of incarcerated parents. Through a consortium of
faith-based partnerships, and “People of Faith Mentoring
Children of Promise” – the AMACHI motto- a whole
generation of our community’s children can become happy
and productive citizens.
